Northern Biochemical Company was established in 1993 in the Institute of Biology, Komi Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences Urals Division, with the objective of producing pure ecdysteroids from plants. The Institute has been carrying out investigations on phytoecdysteroids since 1992. The main specialisations of research work are:
Ecdysteroids are widely used in research works as moulting hormones of insects and crustaceous. 20-Hydroxyecdysone is a constituent part of some tonic drugs.
